Ted -

Your local hobby shop (particularly if they cater to model railroaders) 
will have Delrin rod of the proper size.  I think it's 3/32" dia, but 
measure to be sure.  The "originals" have the end "chamfered" or the 
edges slightly rounded.  You can do this to the end of the full size rod 
on a piece of fine emery or sandpaper, then cut off the correct length 
by rolling the rod on a hard surface with a new X-Acto blade.  This will 
make a nice square cut for the back end.  Then sand the end of the full 
rod again and cut off another peg.

The original pegs were just pushed in, and I suspect whatever the 
material was (I doubt it was ivory) shrank over 50 years or so and most 
just fell out.  A spot of glue on the back end of the new ones would be 
a good idea.
