I put a couple jumpers across the NB socket as suggested by several list 
members and the receiver came to life.  Much better now.

thanks to all who had similar thoughts.  What a lucky coincidence that i 
should see something on Ebay that would stir the thought process.  never 
would have thought about the NB causing those problems, but then again 
there are a lot of things i never think about when it comes to radios. 
Lack of something!
