Chris,
To add to Garey's excellent description of the TR-3, the relay sometimes
goes bad and that is a chore to repair. Doesn't do the WARC bands either.
The TR-3 is the only all tube transceiver that Drake made. Everything
after was hybrid, starting with the solid state oscillators in the 4
series. My first piece of Drake gear was a beat up TR-3 that had been used
as a foot rest under my friends workbench. In the early 90's when I got
back into ham radio he gave me the rig so I could get on the air. Took a
bit of work to get the old girl going. After several months I became an
avid Drake enthusiast and now own too many of the 4's and 7's. I like them
well enough to run a little repair service: drakerepair.com.
I bought Garey's CD that gives an excellent description and location of all
the parts in the C Twins. Wish he would do the TR-4 series too. Good
info. Good price too as you can otherwise spend a week tracing out the
wiring to find out where the parts are mounted.
