Jack -
Try a 6EA8 in place of the 6U8 and most likely your original crystal
will work. This is a common problem in the 2B.
Keep in mind that the 2B is essentially an 80M receiver with crystal
controlled converters for the other bands.
A full alignment is not all that difficult following the procedure in
the manual. Be careful adjusting the Passband Tuner, the slugs should
require very little if any adjustment. They also have some "spring" and
tend to "jump" in small steps. Unless the Passband Tuner seems to be
peaking off from where it should, you might just skip that part.
Also, the Passband knob is a 1/4" inch shaft knob on a 1/8" inch shaft,
with a fiber "sleeve". The fiber sleeve is slit lengthwise to allow the
knob setscrew to compress it to grab the shaft. Be sure the sleeve is
oriented inside the knob with the slit 90 degrees away from the setscrew.
