I picked up a new in the box Eico 722 VFO about 10 years ago and paired it
with my 2NT. I wasn't very impressed. The VFO was built flimsy and had
chirp. That's not to say they all have chirp, but they are all built pretty
flimsy. I use a Hallicrafters HT-18 with it now, and it is a rock solid VFO
with very little drift. Unfortunately the're a little hard to find. I
suspect the Heathkit HG-10 would be a much better choice than the Eico, and
the're very available. The transmitter itself is a joy to operate. It has
no chirp with crystals and works smoothly all the way through 10 meters.
The only thing I find annoying is the fixed antenna coupling.
Drake ran adds claiming that a matching VFO was "on the way", but it never
materialized.
