The TR5 VFO is a PTO, just as the one in the TR7. The PTO is, as you 
say, heterodyned with a set of crystals. No PLL, DDS, or anything, just 
a plain VFO and crystals mixed ( = low phase noise.)

You have the selection of two filters, the 2.3 kHz, and one optional, 
could be 500 Hz, or whatever you chose. Mine is 500 Hz.

I bought mine from Denmark for, if I remember correctly, the equivalent 
of $400, inculding the PS5 power supply and a non-Drake mic.

Regarding a service manual, as far as I know there is only an 
instruction manual with a circuit diagram (just as was the case with the 
4-series, for example.)
