Sounds like your R4C needs some work.  That can happen with older gear.  I 
purchased two of my current R4C stock new in the early 1970's and despite 
tender, loving care over the decades, they have required work to keep them up to 
snuff.  Perform a good maintenance, install the right filters and you'll have a 
cw receiver that will put your rice boxes to shame.
