    1) could be an intermittent parasitic oscillation, check 6JB6 
neutralization or even an oscillation at IF channel. Verify grid 
coupling capacitor for DC leaks and negative bias supply stability.
    2) maybe your VFO linearity is not the best, but read the manual for 
the related specs (dial accuracy within calibrator's range, etc.)
