I've been using an older pre-amp for years and years on Drake gear and 
anything else I had operating. There are many times when I COULD NOT
HEAR
WELL the station transmitting. With a pre amp I could. 
Note: My hearing has been getting worse.
Note: I also use an Autek QF1-A  to pull the weak ones out of the noise 
 level created by conditions and the pre amp.
BUT 
IT WORKS WELL!
No spam please and don't hit me on the head but this appeared to be a
one sided discussion. Also, there's nothing wrong with my R4C.

BTW the Pre amp is tubed an old "PT" by Aerotron. I'd be unhappy without
it. It also is a power center, and relayed for other station gear.
