Hello from Vienna !
Today I got a very nice R4A (the last one of the R4 series I needed - I
tried to get one over 2 years).
But I have some problems where I need some suggestions or help:
1.) The line transformer get very warm (about 40 deg. centigrade I think
after an one hour operation. And also the filter cap gets a bit warm, bu it
may be its comming from the transformer by warming it up. Her I think the
way is to change the filter cap. Thats no problem. But could there be also
another reason for warming up the transformer. There is only a little hume
on the audio output, but there is one.
2.) If I switch to the noise blanker or to CALibrate, the receiver "mutes",
so I get no signal out of it, and the S-meter goes to 100 % (over 60 dB) at
the end of the scale as it does when I go to ext. mute. The 100 kHz Xtal is
mounted and the tube is ok. If I insert a shorted plug into the mute jack on
the rear side of the R4A, the calibrator is working and I also can receive
when the function switch is set to Noise Blanker. IS this OK ????
3.) The 3rd "problem" was (or is) when I receive an USB signal I have to set
the Passband tuning knob to L . I turned the knob 180 degrees and now its ok
(I hope).
But in LSB (40m) I have to turn the knob left of the point L (left from the
3 markes that indicate the right position depending on the bandwith I
choose.
In USB its as on all my 3 other R4X: at the end of the smallest line above
the passband knob I receive ok when using 1.2 kHz bandwith, and so on. But
when I use the 4.8 kHz bandwith the passband tuning is nearly uneffective.
Is this also ok ? I hope I have written it so, that you can understand my
poor English, hi.
I will realign the receiver only if its necessary; its very sensitive,
perfect reception and the dial is correct with the frequency of an incomming
signal compared with another receiver.
Last not least on 10 meter band if I tune the preselector I don't get a
maximum of noise (no antenna connected, or no signal to hear with connected
antenna. Where I should look here first. The Xtal for 10 meters is in the
receiver.
Perhaps you can give me a little help to get this really nice one perfect.
I have bought it via Ebay and I'm really satisfied with what I got. Its
better than described. And I tried to get a R4A with bidding at Ebay 6 times
and 6x I lost in the last seconds. But this time i got it. It was not cheap
(262 $ US) but I'm happy that I finally got one. Now I own them: R4, R4A,
R4B and R4C plus MS-4.
And I must tell you: To buy via Ebay in the USA its cheaper and better than
here in Europe, although the price for shipment is quite high. I bought 4
Drakes from the states and never got a bad one.
TIA de Kurt.
