San: The L4B was designed to operate efficiently at the old legal limits of 1kw dc and 2kw ssb peak input. While the 3-500Z's and the rf deck can certainly handle more and the power supply perhaps a little more in intermittent duty, why do it? The receiving station won't hear much difference from the extra one or two db you'll be wringing out of it. I enjoy running my L4B well within Drake's original specs and it has repaid me with years and years of faithful service. During that same time period I've had a series of Henrys, Alphas and homebrew amps for satisfying my occasional QRO needs. They have the power supply to do the job and you won't be asking a pony to pull a load meant for a mule.
