Things this week:
ARRL Field Day
This week Bob Baker, N8ADO, will talk about exciting changes for this year's
Field Day.
Hint - you can work at home and give DARA credit. A win win.
Here is write up from Steve, AE8AT.
2020 Field Day for DARA Repeater
Field Day is this coming weekend, June 27-28. The COVID-19 pandemic is
causing disruptions in our lives, and that extends to Field Day. This short
article will try to address things to expect if you go to a Field Day site
and rules changes for this year.
Field Day is a day to set-up our radios in field conditions and operate for
24 hours. It is an example of how we can serve our local and national
communities if that need ever arises. Field Day is also a time we try to
reach out to the public by inviting them out to see what we do, both to
build awareness but also to interest people in the hobby. It is also an
opportunity for groups to socialize. With a pandemic virus actively
spreading by the simple act of breathing, clubs have considered how to
approach their "usual" Field Day activity. Clubs have cancelled or modified
their Field Day plans. The permitting organization might have placed
restrictions on a club, or refused the permit forcing the club to find a
different site. Call ahead before you go to save yourself the hassle if the
club had to cancel or relocate, or learn if they have other restrictions in
place. Above all, please be considerate to our hams who may have conditions
that put them at higher risk.
As for contest rules, the ARRL has made changes for 2020 in order to
encourage people to operate separately rather than as a group. Update your
logging software! Two big changes are that "home" stations (Class D) will
be allowed to contact each other for points, and aggregate scoring changes.
Class D is a station "operating from permanent or licensed station locations
using commercial power" per the ARRL contest rules. In prior years, two
Class D stations could not work each other for points. The change for this
year puts the Class D station on equal footing with the other classes and
provides an incentive to stay home. This change will definitely be
temporary as it runs counter to the Field Day objectives.
A second major change is the aggregate scoring rule. This rule change
allows individuals operating separately from the club to have their scores
counted in the club total. This is exciting! This rule allows the club to
hold Field Day as Class A. Any individual who wants or needs to be separate
but still wants to participate from the field can operate as Class B under
their own call. Another club member who is interesting in building up a
rover that can operate while in motion can participate as Class C under
their own call. Still other club members can operate from their home
stations as Class D, or if they have emergency power at home as Class E,
under their own call. The individual scores from each of these different
Classes all roll together into one score for the club. Additionally, both
the club and individual scores are published! This means you can compete as
Class B-Battery powered running 5 watts, and see how your score compares to
others in that category, and your club still receives points! The ARRL
Field Day FAQ instructs each individual call sign to submit their results
separately, and list the full club name without abbreviations in the "club
or group name field" field on the data entry website.
Additional Field Day information is available from the ARRL website. In
addition to the usual rules and contest information, they have some guidance
material for COVID-19 if your club is looking for options.

Brian, N8UDQ, will do a demo setup for installing and doing a basic
configuration for pFSense on either a virtual machine or bare metal. There
will be a few slides, some live screen sharing during setup and a list of
links for further information. As always, I'll be able to answer specific
questions regarding setups. If you'd like me to prepare demos for your
answer, please email your question to N8UDQ at markland-ohio.com and I'll try
and include the answer.
Projects
Keep working on your projects at home.
License Exam Questions of the week
One question is drawn from each of the three question pools. Steve, AE8AT,
