Answers are at the end of this email. week #122

Joseph John Thomson was born 18 December 1856 near Manchester, England. At
age 14 he entered Owens College, and at age 20 he entered Trinity College
where he would remain the rest of his life. Well, I'm sure he went home on
weekends. While his 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics for the conduction of
electricity by gases ensured his legacy, it is because he is credited with
the discovery of the electron that he is included in our quiz. After a
guest lectureship at Princeton in 1896 (which would be published in 1897
"Discharge of Electricity through Gases") he began studying cathode rays.
While his laboratory device was similar to what we would call a cathode ray
tube, it was a bit more primitive. With the device he was able to determine
the mass and charge of the electron. He also observed that radium and UV
light affected the degree ionization of the plasma. Information in this
description was drawn from nobelprize.org
