[DARARepeater] In search of some ideas to help with my project

Greetings All,
I have something for you to ponder while you are in the "stay at home" mode.  I am working on trying to "cut the cord" with DirecTV and I have an issue I need help with.  One of my TV's has a DVR receiver from Direct with quite a few movies and other shows that I would like to keep.  So I would like to figure out a way to get those off the DVR onto either DVD media or some other storage media (USB sticks or hard drive) in some format that I can later play on my TV.  The shows are recorded in HD (1080) resolution.  The HD output from the DVR is a HDMI connection.
Does anyone on here have any experience with this, or have a magic box, or other solution that could help me.
