N0MU, JA, Joe Allen worked at KFS in Half Moon Bay, then went out to sea on
one of the Santa cargo/passenger ships which went around South America for
an approximately 2 month round trip, finally ending up as CRO on SS
MARIANA/WSNA - where I had the pleasure of working him many times from
sea. It seems that one of the Santa ships was always going through
the Magellan Strait across Tierra de Fuego, Chile, they were required to
send a safety message when they were passing some of the narrow points, and
you'd hear the ships on 500 with their "TTT TTT TTT CQ CQ CQ" broadcasts on
500 kHz. That's beautiful country, perhaps my favorite place in the
world. Joe Allen, N0MU, JA, is an excellent operator.
