Here's a neat animated map showing the growth of the worldwide fiber optic
network, now totalling about 750,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers):

The first fiber optic cable across the Atlantic was laid just 32 years ago,
in 1988. Here's the first test of the new technology in 1982:
