IMI is listed as the question mark but its used in
combination with letters to get repeats, for instance ?AA for All
After some word, AB for all before some word, etc. The letters
are listed in traffic handling instructions in the ARRL Handbook
and elsewhere. It is also used as the interrogatory for Q signals
i.e. QRU? have you anything for me? Sometimes used as short hand
for QRZ?, just the ? is sent and understood to mean "call me again".
I don't remember ever hearing III used as a period on the air
but some may have used it.

The IMI you might hear in a sentence or text is the signal that the last word, before the IMI, is being Repeated. It is normally used for People, or Place names, to insure correct copy. So, it is really signifying two different things: the question mark, and "repeat last word" Most of the Western world used pretty much the same codes, then you have Asia, and the Middle East, plus Russia etc. with Morse differences, since they also have different letters in their particular languages.
