[CW] Navy RMs?

As a General Class ham, joined the USN in 1967, then went to RM school in 1968, followed by High Speed Morse Code Operator which I actually just kind of tested out of, and my first duty was on the CW circuits of NAVCOMSTA Japan. My CW skills actually came in useful when later, aboard LST-1185 (USS Schenectady), our flagship (USS Tripoli) lost comms in the Sea of Japan during our 1971 deployment. I contacted NDT on one of their S/S (Ship to Shore) CW frequencies, set up a special TTY frequency, and we re-established TTY (Orestes) comms on that frequency. So, you never know when that CW knowledge can be handy!

Went aboard the USS BOXER (LPH-4) and yes, we used Morse, but we used far more encrypted RTTY (KW7s, KLB47s, etc.). Note: I got my ticket in '63 and was copying 20 wpm before enlistment; also took typing in high school and had to achieve 60 wpm to pass the course. So typing CW was pretty much a no brainer for me. My service was probably a rare occurrence -- where the Navy actually used my skills and interests instead of trying to turn me into a Bosun's Mate or a cook or something HI Stan WB2LQF
