I got involved in Eastern Mass Net back in 1965, they ran a slow speed net
in the Novice band (3700-3750 kc/s). I found them very welcoming.
When I came home from sea in 1980, I joined again, and they were so
impressed by my traffic handling, two of the net managers drove to my home
to visit.
One was a sea captain the other was the net manager. I guess they liked my
hand key sending. I learned that I can't play hot shot on a hand key, all
I can do is try to send well, if I want to expose my pride, so I sent
well. They liked my sending, and I had worked on it, imitating "DE W1AW"
on my tape recording of the W1AW bulletins I had recorded.
Of course, being a professional Morse operator in 1980, I wasn't going to
take any put downs from any of the members, but I don't remember any to be
honest.
But if they're were, I'd just ignore them, unless the person was equal or
better than I was and then I'd listen, I can always learn, and some of our
sending habits are so old we don't hear them. I could learn to run
wordstogether. Someone at a commercial station told me to deliberately
pause after each word - like a double space. I heard the old CW traffic
handlers doing that as well as the better coast station operators. So I
did that.
I visualized a NEWS TICKER like was on the Empire State building, news
would be written in light bulbs from right to left, then "falling off" the
end of the display. At every word, I'd add extra space, and my sending
improved - I learned the phrase:
SEND THE SPACES!
