Those interested in the Titanic should read:
The Titanic Disaster Hearings: the Official Transcripts of
the 1912 US Senate Investigation
This is available from Amazon.
There was so much wrong that its hard to know where to
start. The investigation detailed by the book was by the
United States Congress, spearheaded by a congressman from my
home state of Michigan. If he had not pushed to find out
the truth the Brits would have covered the whole thing up.
Everyone knows the Titanic did not have enough life
boats to go around but even though the regulations covering
safety of life at sea were changed the Lucitania, which was
torpedoed and sank a few years later also had life boat
problems. While the Lucitania had enough lifeboats many
(maybe most) of them could not be launched due to the design
of the ship. This problem did not go away; another ship
disaster, the sinking of the Marine Electric in 1987 had a
loss of all but three of the crew of forty-five partly
because the life boat davits were such that the boats could
not be launched with a full load by one man.
The conditions of life at sea are still not very good
for most sailors in the merchant fleets. This is worth some
attention because so much of what we consume in the U.S.
comes to us via these ships.
