[CW] Clueless ( as in not a clue )

Years ago I bought a Begali CW Machine.  It monitors my output whether
bug, cootie, straight key or paddle. It does this among the 1001 other
things it does but that's another story.

When I first got it, I was appalled at how crummy my sending really was.
The mind adjusts for all sorts of timing errors except for the most
serious errors.  But the CW Machine which uses PARIS standard catches
even the slightest screw up (character, word, etc.)

After a few weeks I was doing a lot better.  Now, several years later, I
can make my 'swiper or my bug sound like keyer code.

I'm not bragging here but just trying to show that feedback is the
breakfast of champions: if you have a method of getting the feedback,
then you can do something about it.  For me, the CW Machine did it.

The best way to check your own sending is to use a copy program, and see
if IT copies you.  Considering how badly many of these programs do, it
shows you are doing quite well, if it copies you at 100 percent.

Dave .....

For a touch of reality ... every one should tape record their CW for 20
or 30 minutes ... and then play it back and listen to it ...

Bs for Ds ... 6s for Bs...  .. maybe something worse ...We record our CW
once in a while ...it can an be a sobering experience..

It is not hard to get into some "bad" habits ....

To the real Morse operators, they claimed there was ne'er a signal they
couldn't copy.

Many times it was the poor senders who had lots of traffic - and at 50
cents a word that income increased every day, a 300 word message was
$150.00 income, paid my pay for the day.

I remember the Frenchman whom I called and I could copy NIL he was so
bad, I finally managed to get from him how happy he was as he hadn't had
a contact in months and he had had a stroke.

Of course most of the poor code is from people who should practice or
sober up before they send.

Am I the only one noticing that more and more operators are completely
clueless about the art of sending CW? I can generally copy 25+ WPM of
GOOD code. That would be code with nominally correct dit to dah ratios
and spacing's.  It doesn’t have to be perfect but geese! There are ops
out there that I couldn’t copy at any speed! A long time ago in a galaxy
far far away we would call them LIDS. Dits that are barely contact
closures and dahs that run on and on with no break between letters let
alone words!!

Sorry! Just felt the need to rant! I feel better now!
