I never considered that one could copy code, unless and until each and
every character is written down. That was the way I learned, and also
copied code in the military at somewhere between 40 to 50 wpm that way.
I simply do not have a memory to remember what the last two words were,
unless they are on paper. We passed messages that had to be perfect.
Then later on, handling State Dept messages it was the same way. Much
of the time we were copying five letter code groups, and those were then
decrypted to plain language. Again, perfection was required. I can sit
and hear callsigns, names, QTH, antennas etc, but MU write them down to
remember them for the next two minutes. If we met up with automatic
circuits, sending at 100 wpm, we had a machine that ran a paper tape,
and a ink pen that showed the dots and dits, and spaces, just like you
see on a waterfall screen today. We had to type the characters out,
from sight, and typed as fast as possible to keep up with the speed of
reception., even though those tapes could be slowed down. If you did
that, you fell so far behind that you spent hours catching up, at the en
of the day.
