Depending on the vintage it sent SOS on 500 kHz, 8364 kHz in A2 keyed mode
(Modulated Continuous Wave), later 2182 DSB AM with alert MAYDAY tone was
added.
Old sets just sent SOS on 500 kHz.
A switch and key were provided to send manually and a receiver received DSB
AM which means that they could hear spark and modulated CW on 500 kHz.
They were used, and I used one myself but only to test it on 500 kHz into a
lifeboat radio antenna held on a ten foot pole and wires strung fore and
aft on a lifeboat.
