THIS IS GREAT NEWS FOR THE ZL HAMS. I HAVE NOTICED ALL THE EFFORT FOR 137 KHZ FOR USA HAMS. WHY NOT THE 470 KHZ INSTEAD? MANY FORMER OPS HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF THIS SPECTRUM AND WOULD USE IT IF ALLOWED. 137 KHZ SOUNDS DIFFICULT FOR MOST OPS. I HOPE WE CAN WORK THE ZL HAMS ON 470 KHZ SOMEDAY.

I thought that there might be someone on the list interested in this, especially in view of the recent discussion of 160 meter. So the 600 meter band is open now in New Zealand and the ARRL is working on it for us as well. Below, where Ralph says 600 KHz, he means 600 meters, and actually it is more like 630 meters. The original note below came to me from a leader of one of the 600 meter experimental groups that is working with connections to the ARRL, but the letter itself is from Don Wallace in New Zealand. I think that there are a couple of us on this list that is connected to the US groups.

NZART, the national association representing Amateur Radio in New
ealand, has successfully negotiated access to the 600
Hz band.
In a message to members, they write:
As members may be aware, the band 472 kHz to 479 kHz was allocated to
he Amateur service for use on a secondary basis
t the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) held earlier this year.
We have now agreed the basis on which New Zealand Amateurs will be
iven access to this band with the Radio Spectrum
olicy and Planning Group of the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment:
. Frequency range: 472 kHz to 479 kHz
Type of allocation: Secondary (see definition below)
 Power Output: 25 W eirp
Bandwidth restrictions: None (the previous 200 Hz limit is removed)
As a result of this new allocation, Amateurs will no longer have
ccess to the previous temporary allocation at 505 -
15 kHz. The Ministry has, however, agreed that the temporary use in
he band 505 kHz to 515 kHz will be permitted for
ne further year, until the end of 2013, to provide amateurs with an
pportunity to retune and/or rebuild their
quipment.
The Amateur General User Licence has been updated to reflect these
hanges which take effect from 20 December 2012.

Definition of Secondary Allocation
For members who are unfamiliar with the concept of a secondary
llocation, the following excerpt from the International
adio Regulations may be of interest:
"Allocations are made on a primary or on a secondary basis. Stations
f a secondary service cannot cause harmful
nterference to stations of primary services to which frequencies are
lready assigned or to which frequencies may be
ssigned at a later date. Stations of a secondary service cannot claim
rotection from harmful interference from
tations of a primary service to which frequencies are already
ssigned or to which frequencies may be assigned at a
ater date."
