One way for the modern ham to know just how good he is sending is to send it to himself by handkey, and copy your yourself, using a computer cw reading program. Since most of them are pretty lousy, especially with qrm/qrn etc. if they copy 100 percent, you done good.!

Record some of your own sending then listen to it about a week later.
When I first started with a bug I just could not believe my fist was so bad so I put effort into slower and smooth sending.
Later hams were asking me what type of keyer I was using.
BTW,as a Novice I was able to copy 27-30 WPM.
No software,no CD's no comuter junk, just good time behind my rig where I had to copy good and bad sending, and put up with QRN,QRM,QRPp but I stuck with it and i'm now shooting for 40 WPM again
