When I lived in Winchester, NH I often had the BOLDNESS to check into the
VTN which was the Vermont traffic net. Then I noticed that my nearest CW
neighbor who taught science at Northfield Academy in Northfield, MA checked
in also. He reasoned that he could walk across the main street, and cross
the little bridge that ran over the Connecticut river into Vernon, VT in
about 3 minutes. The bridge was near the Pizza place and also near the
Northfield post office where I used to drop off my mail. I also saw a
fellow standing outside of the Northfield, MA post office with a Society of
Wireless Pioneers (SOWP) Titanic pin.

Of course, I had to say something, so I asked about the pin and told him
that I also had one of those pins. I introduced myself and I found out that
I had both spoken to him when I worked in broadcasting but also on the air,
and I'd worked him a few times in the FOC marathon.

So gang if you're up in Northern Massachusetts, or in the great states of VT
and NH - join the net - they have a great history of having some of the
greatest operators I've ever worked. W1PEX, W1ZPB, W1ZW. Lots of history
and lots of skill.

That fellow from Northfield used a straight key for his entire ham career
and he has one beautiful fist. I used to work him from sea and he sounded
really salty like he'd been a Marconi man.
