OK Thanks for the info. As I see it, using random 5 letter groups would
require perfect copy for one minute and that would be 500 characters (not
counting spaces). We always considered a group to actually be 6 character
lengths, because you must also include the space between groups, which is
equal to a character length. If you divide 500 characters by 6 that would
give you an actual gpm of 83.3, so in order to get 100 wpm you would have to
copy 600 groups.
Our testing was done by not only increasing the number of groups needed to
attain the gpm figure, but the time spent copying was increased for each
additional 10 gpm added to the speed. In other words, if you were copying
at 10gpm, you had to copy 10 groups solid in one minute. If you were
copying at 20 gpm, you had to copy 40 groups in 2 minutes, and at 30 gpm you
had to copy solid for 3 minutes. The actual tapes ran for 10 minutes, and
we copied for that entire time. In order to pass the speed, you would need
your required groups anywhere within the period of time you copied. In
other words, at 30 wpm, if you made an error 2 minutes and 15 seconds into
the tape, the next group would start you over and you would need 3 minutes
perfect copy from there. Out of a class of some 115 students, only three of
us passed 32 wpm, in 6 months given these requirements. Later on, I sat a
net that required us to copy somewhere between 40 and 45 wpm, for hours at a
time.
