It's not illegal and is occasionally still done. 

I found an acquaintance (N5EL) in the old 40m Novice band having a QSO 
in American morse. Identifying in International Morse, as you pointed out.

He volunteers as a docent in the telegraph room at a railroad museum, 
where he demonstrates the use of keys and sounders, and was practicing 
with an out-of-state ham who was learning the "craft". The other op
volunteers at a similar museum.

I've also heard American Morse on 80m, although I didn't recognize the
calls of the ops.
