Very nice explanation indeed. I am indeed attempting to copy code at high
speed (20wpm character speed and 10wpm overall) where I cannot comfortably
count dits and dats anymore. Maybe I need to lower my overall space a bit as
you are suggesting. I will give that a try and see if I can make better
progress. Thank you!

P.s. Now feel woefully inadequate since I'm on it for at least 2 months (I
am at character 26 using Koch) and your students were able to do it in 2-3
days. ; )

The problem appears that you fellows learned the code by trying to listen
and count dots and dashes.  The code is just like and language, and should
be learned by the "sound" not by the shape.  Its late now, but you need to
set your computers/tape decks/whatever to send to you with at least 150
percent of the speed you can comfortably copy.  The way to learn it best, is
to hike the "sent" speed up to 18-20 wpm, and the "space" gaps at 5 wpm.
That way, just like a baby does with language, you learn the sound of the
word - before he learns to spell it.  That works with the "word" being a
single letter.  In other words didididah (at 20 wpm).   Not dit dit dit dah.
Then a space between the first character and the next of at least a duration
that would be put between them at 5 wpm.  As you gain "knowledge of the
"sound" of a letter, and add more letters, you can narrow the gap of space
between the characters, until you are soon copying an easy 20 wpm character
set, at 13-15 wpm, then increase the speed of the code characters, and do it
again, then again.  Doing it this way, I have had dozens of students learn
the code in 2 to 3 days.  (Look up the info about the ham station at the Boy
Scout National Jamboree in 1985, to see some of the results.
