I made my living in maritime communications across three decades, from the
days of hand keyed HF Morse in the 50's through to the days of multichannel
highspeed data communications via satellite in the 80's.
I can assure you that the satellites were far and away more reliable than
the vagaries of HF.
This past fall I had the privilege to ride as a guest on a new Navy
destroyer from Pearl Harbor to San Diego. In the few years since I was last
at sea, the improvements are even more astounding, in all facets but most
notably in reliability.
