Actually, in a voice QSO, tone of voice, formulation or something
like "back to you (OM/John/ Bill etc.)" indicates AR.
AR tells you that there wont be any more information/text in that
particular transmission so you don't have to concentrate on what's being
sent which is particulary practical during bad Q-SB,RN,-RM or pooe signal
strength condx, and that you should now get ready to reply.
KN is very practical when you specifically intend to listen to a reply
from one particular station, especially if you have several lined up on
the frequency.
If another station has something important to say that can't wait (s)he
can always break into the QSO - best at end of (i.e. between)
transmissions.
