Michiel,

A semi-automatic key has a speed range of about 20 to 40 wpm.  You'll need
something to send with under 20 wpm, so buy a good hand key!

You'll also develop a feeling and rhythm of the code in doing so.  This will
definitely help you when learning a semi-automatic key (or paddles and
keyer).
