[CW] Straight key vs paddle

I am a bit aghast, at the number of really lousy recordings of cw keying I see on the internet. Some are indeed well done, quite copyable, and a joy to listen to. Others, should just stay on the air and get their capabilities up before trying to show "how to". Coming up thru the ranks, I was always told to learn to key with a straight key, before attempting bugs, etc. I must agree with that. If you have a computer program which will copy your own keying output, please go there, do that, until you see perfect copy by the machine. Then, increase your speed, over and over again, until, each time you have perfect copy, and have reached your top speed( again with perfect copy). . You will not only know what perfect code sounds like, but be able to send it. At that point, then go to a keyer/bug/paddle, etc and start with it. Over the years, I have met many people who were intercept operators, and couldnt send their way out of a paper bag, at the beginning of their ham life, but they did know what good code sounded like, and were easily able to move up thru manual keys, into semi auto keying.

I'm slowly starting to consider what key I should use. I have a straight practice key, but after watching some youtube videos I think to skip that entire experience.

  Hi Michael --

Exactly what did the youtube videos show that cause you to want to "skip that entire experience" ?
