[CW] Thinking about tubes/ CW Contest Participation

It seens to vary from one event to another.
The May 2009 QST article on the 2008 CW Sweepstakes reported
1419 submitted logs.
But the number of logs submitted in the 1958 CW Sweepstakes
was 1677 (May 1959 QST). Of course, that was a banner year
for propagation, but consider also that every one of those
entries was prepared on paper, and cost the submitter a bit
of postage; not like the essentially cost-free mechanism most
participants enjoy today, of attaching a Cabrillo log file
to an email.
I don't know if 1958 represents the high water mark of SS/CW
participation or not. It would be interesting to know what
it is, and see if that level is broken within the next few
years.
