The button knob was probably because they were available, but it also
makes the gap between paddle and button wider so the "C" grasp of the
fingers that hold the key while the wrist is rolling on the table is
more comfortable.

Two paddle pieces on a bug is way to narrow for comfortable use - the
wrist must roll and the fingers grap and hold the key in the "C"
shaped grab.
