[CW] electronic keyers quesion

I know nothing about programming with PIC or microcontrollers. Do cw keyers use the one bit as the basic CW character. Example: a dot is one bit. a dash is three consecutive bits (dots). Is this the basic principle on which they work? Has anyone noticed a difference in sending ease with electronic keyers made by different manufacturers that utilize these devices?
