Great story.

What always confuses me is that we traded a pinpoint accurate,
narrow beamwidth signal generator for what I assume is a near
omni-directional transmission that has greater potential for intercept.

Or are they still using signal lights?  Here's an interesting classroom
project - not sure how old it is -
