I'm sorry that wonder and mystery is gone for you. Very sad. That has
been a part of Amateur Radio, for me, and continues to be on a daily
basis, regardless of any test requirement.
I believe that wonder and mystery will continue to attract new SWLs and
hams to CW. Without being "coerced" into learning Morse as a requirement
for HF access, perhaps fewer will learn Morse, yet a greater proportion
of the ones who do will have a more genuine interest.
I am not and never was in favor of the "no code" idea. In fact I
submitted my comments against the no code proposals to the FCC. I'm not
happy about the new ruling, yet I will not let it keep me from enjoying
CW and helping anyone else who shows an interest in learning Morse. CW
is not dead, nor is the wonder and mystery, at least it is not for me.
This latest ruling should not have been a surprise to anyone. I expect
it will only be a matter of weeks before we see a "No Exam" proposal to
the FCC. That should also be no surprise. Perhaps it will not be headed
up by a publisher of exam memorization guides though.
