I once read a WW2 story about the French Congo during the occupation of 
France.  Congo remained under the Free French and became a base of operation 
aginst the Nazi occupation.  Native Congolese were trained as Morse 
intercept operators.  Most of these trainees were completely illiterate and 
had no knowledge of the French or German languages, but they were trained to 
relate the sound of each Morse character directly to pressing a certain key 
on the typewriter, and became highly skilled at intercepting Morse code 
messages while having no clue what they were transcribing.
