I don't think you "have it wrong", but neither do they.  They are, in fact,
deliberately "elitist" (to use your term) and seek only members who have
attained their standard of excellence.  Good on them!

There are some clubs (I'd have to track them down, but I believe in
ON-land) which cater specifically to the ultra-QRQ crowd.  Membership
qualifications in the 50-60WPM range.  Just like you don't get invited to
the Masters with a double-digit golf handicap, similarly you don't get
invited to these clubs if you're struggling along at 13WPM.  

There are dozens of clubs like FISTS which will welcome all comers without
regard to skill level.  Good on them also!
