While there are some people with legitimate problems that prevent them from
learning CW by ear, I can't possibly believe that 90% of the people who
complain about having that problem actually do. I believe that most of the
people who "can't" learn CW just don't want to commit their time to learning
it.
I originally hated it, but in the mid 70's, there was no way around it. I
finally buckled down and committed myself to the time needed for two months
to learn the CW to get my novice license. That's all that's required for
Extra these days.
I think a lot of the problem is that these days too many people grew up
hearing and making excuses rather than getting results so now we have a
bunch of people can't learn CW by studying 5 minutes a day once a month or
so, therefore, they have a learning disability.
I finally conquered CW when I decided to myself that I was smart enough to
learn CW and I didn't care if I liked it or not. I determined to learn it
and committed the required time and two months later I was hiking through
neighborhoods looking for ham antennas hoping to find a general class who
could give me the exam.
Now, 26 years later, I find myself surrounded by more people that "can't"
learn CW than can. Funny thing, though. Every one of them says why they
can't learn it almost word for word as the others. Makes me wonder who
wrote the script.

"I don't operate CW" is a reasonable response. I just read it as. "I don't
know how to operate CW".
If a chicken can learn to play the piano, why can't a ham learn the code?
