Helpful comments all.  Apparently I'm not the only one who is tone challenged.

FYI, the Yaesu FT-920 has an excellent zero-beat visual indicator that 
makes a nice complement to the "Spot" button. I haven't found the Mark V's 
visual indicator as helpful. The problem for me is that IMHO the ICOM 
IC-746's overall receiver design is much more sophisticated and beats both 
of these rigs hands down. No contest. Can't have everything, I guess.
