[CW] Morse proficiency

I kept a split phone watch also. I used a TRIMM headset and each side =
of the phones was terminated in a phone plug. The TRIMM headsets as you =
might remember were terminated in what was known as PHONE PINS - which =
used to be fitted under a FANSTOCK CLIP in old radio sets. Even present =
day phone plugs have grooves for the phone pins. The other end of the =
TRIMM cord terminated in a short piece of metal which was crimped in the =
headset by a screw.

In the SPLITPHONE arrangement, one cord went to one receiver - one went =
to another - and both were tuned to different frequencies. For =
commercial or military work - one receiver was usually on "5 TON" or 500 =
kHz the CW distress and watch frequency, the other ear for working =
frequencies.

Often we were called on 500 kHz (600 meters) for a QSO and we heard it =
in our ears, so we would have to stop sending on our working frequency =
and answer on 500 kHz and say tell the station we were busy, and told =
him to stand in line - he would be added to our working list (QRY list).

On ships, I've heard good operators working one coast station, then be =
called by another - the ship operator answered the new call with an =
extra transmitter and then resumed sending on his big transmitter. =
Really neat operator he was.

  GE, All

I have to put my vote in with DR, I can either copy, or talk, but not =
both at the same time. Now here is one caveat-- I have worked "split =
phone watch" in the past, meaning that one Rube Goldberg'ed a pair of =
headphones, so you had one on each ear with a plug, and monitored two =
freqs at once. That, to me is doable, but to the point where if you get =
called simultaneously, one can send "AS1" or if military "ZUJ" to one of =
the stations, then handle one set of traffic, then the other.
or hopefully, call another op to put down his coffee and start copying =
--hi--.=20

I don't like doing it with voice either, it's too easy to get =
confused. However, I had a closed head injury in '99 and my short-term =
memory is not as good as it used to be, getting better, however.

I am CW impaired.

  Bueno amigos...

Certanly I am not one of the best, but I can make a contest QSO 30/35 =
wpm,
drink a "mate infusion" and have an smal talk with my wife, or watching =
TV
sports.

Geo LU8DQ (sk) teach me to made 2 contest QSOs at the same time. It is =
not
to easy but some time it is posible depending on the other operator =
skill.

Muchos saludos

Proficiency in radiotelegraphy encourages the development of any of the
following abilities :

* Higher reaction speed.

* Clever discrimination of the required frequency tone (pitch), the ear
acting like a human band-pass filter.

* Clever co-ordination of simultaneous memory and mechanical action
    (reading
the code and writing it down, or formulating mental images of ideas =
and
keying the alphabetic symbols which represent them).

* Simultaneous use of reasoning and memory capabilities.
