Many rigs like the Johnsons, DX-100 and others chirp on 40 because the VFO
runs straight through on that band. The VFO fundamental is 160 or 40.
Running 160 straight through does not seem to be a problem. The VFO
frequency doubles to 80 and 20, and tripleds and quadruples to 15 and 10.
But there is enough rf feedback into the VFO to generate considerable chirp
on 40. I once used a Heath VF-1 and never could get it to settle down on 40
without quadrupling from 160.
