   I need to insert my option here, everyone needs to own a nice desk MIC
for their HF radio, it's the perfect place to hang your cans (head set)
when you don't need them.

   Every HAM should own a 2 meter (or 70 cm in some locals) HT to copy the
local HAM club's NET where present.  We are all part of our local HAM radio
society as well as the world wide HAM radio society.  If your local government 
wants to alter the tower rules or such, we all need to hear about it, and
sooner is better than later.
   (VHF/UHF is also the traditional means for good operators to brag about their
latest DX contacts)
