John Rippey asks...
> Why, of all the hobbies, do we seek federal rules and enforcement

Because it is NOT just a hobby. It is a government SERVICE, subject to
international treaties. The day we become "just a hobby" will be the day
ham radio ceases to be.

Secondly, we share a resource - the spectrum. We occupy expensive real
estate, especially above 30 MHz, but in HF & MF too. If this became the
survival of the "fittest," ham radio would cease to be. Again, our status
as a SERVICE is what protects us.

So, it is a fact that we have regulation. One can either work with the
system, or deal themself out and dream Libertarian daydreams. But with our
heads in the sand, only our butts are exposed. I'd rather be a player than
on the sidelines griping.
