Hi Nancy,
Interesting, but if you read it carefully, it doesn't say anything we
haven't already heard. I guess the thing that just blows my mind is the
total disregard ARRL has for its membership. Your prediction about losing
CW space is already coming true, just check and see how far down the digital
boys are already on 40 and 20 meters. I predict that when the guys that are
now restricted to above the bottom 25kHz start compaining about being run
over by digital QRM, the bottom 25 will become fair game.
I realize we need something like the ARRL to represent us (wonder where we
can find something that will fill this requirement)? QST has long been a
monthly Color Catalog with technical articles FAR beyond the technical
abilities of the vast majority, I think. How long has it been since you
have seen an article that you would like to try to build, that would then
become part of the daily operation of your station? Gotta say one thing,
the ARRL bureau is pretty good but if they keep upping the $ per # rate, it
is even becoming unattractive.
Oh well, sorry I got on my soapbox.....just sign me a frustrated CW nut.
Tony, W4FOA
PS: And yes, I am an ARRL member

Subject: [CW] ARRL position
I wrote the ARRL and asked what the ARRL position on the CW requirement is
going be -- they have stated before that they will support a code test, but
I think most of us know that doesn't mean much.
Looks like they are going to do another survey -- maybe they didn't like the
results of the last one they did - or maybe they didn't believe it?
Unlike the "dumbing down" , this isn't political - now it's fighting for the
survival of CW on the ham bands. If we lose the test requirement, we will
lose CW-only frequencies. I'm sure the FCC will be inundated with no-code
petitions on Monday morning, so get ready to be heard. We are going to need
everyone to rally and write.
Here is the letter I got back from the Great Lakes Division Director.

Hi, Nancy,
Thanks for your question. It is quite pertinent, obviously.
At this moment, the Board is debating how to proceed. I won't comment
on the discussions beyond saying there is considerable debate over what
we should do and how we should determine what we should do. My
tentative thought for determining what the position should be is to poll
the membership, so keep your eyes open for bulletins from HQ or for a
poll directly from me to the Division.
Tnx, 73,
Jim
