[CW] Rough knob-homemade "improvement", or did they come that way?

I have a mid-40's vintage Lightning Bug that I bought years ago at a thrift
shop for $25. It's never been my favourite, mostly because the Dah knob has
a very rough "non-skid" surface on it.
Now, an old RR lightning slinger might have thought it was just the ticket
to keep his 30-year calluses from slipping, but to say that it rubs me the
wrong way is an understatement. He must have had VERY rough fingers, because
there's a lot of wear on the line closer knob, too.
Question is, did Vibroplex make them that way, or did somebody force a lot
of grit into the surface of the knob?
