I bought my HD 1410 in 1980 and built it for a high school electronics cl=
ass
project. The poorly designed built-in paddle action rendered the keyer
unusable from the start. I modified the unit by removing the Heath paddl=
e
mechanism and wiring the keyer for use with external paddles. I also inst=
alled
a switch to mute the sidetone. I still use the keyer regularly on the ai=
r
with my older transceiver that does not have a built in keyer. Although =
the
HD 1410 has proved to be a rugged piece of gear, it is susceptable to RF.=
  It
sends adequate sounding code, but only the speed is adjustable. =

My recommendation is to purchase a better, modern keyer. =
