Thanks for the info and the link re the Liberty ships.

I have a Scott SLRM receiver, that is built with high mechanical precision 
and extensive shielding.  It is not a real "communications" receiver, but is 
more like a top-of-the-line version of a typical deluxe BC/SW receiver of 
the late 30's.  I understand these were built so that the crew could listen 
to broadcast stations while serving on the Liberty Ships.  One of the 
problems with an ordinary superhet radio was that the enemy could DF the 
radiation from the local oscillator to track down the ship's location.

The SLRM has a BFO, but no coupling circuit to the 2nd detector.  It depends 
on stray  coupling due to the proximity of the two stages.  The result is 
insufficient BFO injection, which makes CW reception difficult and SSB about 
impossible.
